San Antonio - Family & Memories

We had a really nice day today. We picked up my mom and drove to San Antonio to meet up with my aunt & uncle. They were there for a reunion of the 99th Infantry Division. My uncle was at the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle at the Bridge at Remagen. Today, he told me about the wool scarf that his grandmother gave him before he left. It was olive drab, and he kept it with him at the Bulge. That night, it was so cold that he wrapped it around his feet to help keep him warm. Later, it was this that helped him keep his toes, while others in his unit lost some of theirs. The next night, they took Remagen. While they slept after the battle, someone stole the scarf. He never forgot that scarf. We all hope that it may have helped another soldier.

The day was hot, so we spent most of it at the hotel. My sister and her family drove in from Houston to meet up with us. She has two little ones, and it was great to see my niece and nephew. My niece is named for me. Her name is Elise, which means "Little Elizabeth". She is a hoot. She's five, and I don't envy my sister raising her. I got some fantastic pictures of her, that I'll post at some point so you can see what I'm talking about. David and I hooked up with her, her brother Malcolm, and their daddy on the 11th floor of the hotel. They were looking over the balcony, and I watched Elise spit. I looked at her incredulously. She smiled a satisfatory smile and proclaimed, "I spitted!". I thought I was going to completely lose it.
